Stralsund enjoys a truly beautiful lakeside setting ... | Sund Promenade | Schill Park

Guided tour on the history of gardens with Dr Angela Pfennig | Meeting point: Schill Monument | Sarnowstraße | Stralsund | Admission: 9 euros

The Sund Promenade, an urban open-space design dating from the Weimar Republic era and a historically significant example of ‘green modernism’ in the context of garden history, is a popular destination for the people of Stralsund and a much-loved public garden space in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, thanks to its magnificent landscape, its beautiful old trees and an environment largely free from road noise, ranks among the most popular walking routes for the people of Stralsund and is one of the Hanseatic city’s most cherished public garden spaces.

With the simple, regular design of the promenade—featuring architecturally styled spaces that cater to various recreational needs and are linked by an avenue of lime trees—Horticultural Inspector Hans Winter (1895–1969) in 1926–27 a work of garden art that draws on the beach promenade style of the major seaside resorts, yet finds its distinctive character in its nature as an urban park. Here, nature, horticulture and architecture merge to form a total work of art.

The Schillanlage – a gem of Stralsund’s horticultural heritage – serves as a link in a magnificent landscape stretching between Knieperteich and the banks of the Sund. It was restored 20 years ago according to the original plans from the 1920s and is particularly enchanting thanks to its rich, seasonally changing display of flowers.

The historical garden walk leads from the Schill monument through the Schillanlage and along the Sund promenade to the lido.
