Hansel and Gretel: Kaisersaal Special

A fairy-tale opera by Engelbert Humperdinck, libretto by Adelheid Wette

It begins with a children’s song and the urge to move around felt by the siblings Hansel and Gretel in their cramped little house. But soon the scale changes. The little home gives way to the vast, menacing forest. The children’s song becomes a grand opera, enveloping the siblings’ fears – but also the wonders of the evening blessing or the gingerbread house – in sounds of Wagnerian magnitude. And as the children bravely confront the man-eating gingerbread witch, they rise above themselves. They will defeat both: the witch and their own fears. For in fairy tales, as in opera, one thing is indispensable: the jubilant finale.

With his romantic opera, which premiered in 1893, Engelbert Humperdinck explored the psychological depths of the fairy tale. The Theater Vorpommern follows this luminous trail of pebbles and pairs the music with a visually stunning production.
