When the young artist Tove Jansson invents the Moomins in Helsinki in 1945, she is in the midst of a crisis of meaning: she is in an open relationship with the left-wing politician Atos and is wildly in love with the exciting theatre director Vivica. Tove's father, a renowned sculptor, views her work with contempt. And she herself would also prefer to succeed with modern art. But it is her stories of the troll creatures with bulbous noses, drawn on the side, that are printed in series by a newspaper - and make Tove rich and famous in no time. But is this the freedom she has always longed for?

Tove Jansson (1914-2001) became famous with the "Moomin" books and comics, which have been translated into more than 40 languages worldwide. But she also wrote novels for adults, was a political illustrator and caricaturist, and painted and created sculptures. A complex artist and creative pioneer who led an exciting bohemian life between Helsinki, Stockholm and Paris, was a convinced pacifist and quite naturally broke with the gender roles of her time.
