Sabbath Queen (STRAZEkino + film talk with Sandi DuBowski)
The film shows 21 years of Amichai's life and accompanies him on his search for a contemporary Judaism that questions patriarchy, celebrates interfaith love and stands up for peace.
Documentary / US 2024 / Director: Sandi DuBowski / 104 min.
Shot over 21 years, "Sabbath Queen" is a documentary film that follows Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie on his epic journey as the heir to a dynasty of 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis, including the Chief Rabbis of Israel. Torn between rejection and acceptance of his destiny, he becomes a rebellious drag queen, a queer father and the founder of Lab/Shul - an open to all, God-optional, artist-led, experimental pop-up community.
The documentary follows Amichai on his lifelong quest for a creative and radical reimagining of religion and ritual, his questioning of patriarchy and supremacy, his commitment to interfaith love and his fight for peace, ceasefire and an end to the occupation in Israel/Palestine. The film questions what it means for Jews to survive in a difficult, rapidly changing 21st century.
After the screening, we invite you to a discussion with director Sandi DuBowski.
