About the Greifswald Bach Week 2026

In this book, Knut Elstermann embarks on an extraordinary journey to Johann Sebastian Bach. The various cinema and television films that have dealt with the great composer over the decades serve as a common thread. He travels to the original locations of Bach's life and talks to film-makers and music enthusiasts about the challenge of approaching a great artist whose personality is completely overshadowed by his works. Elstermann's book is a declaration of love for Bach, but at the same time, it also entertainingly explores the fundamental questions of biographical storytelling. Where is the line between exaggeration and trivialisation? How can an authentic portrait be created when so much has to be invented?
