Gallery of Romanticism
See Caspar David Friedrich
Caspar David Friedrich was born in Greifswald in 1774. Today, he is the world's most famous painter of the 19th century and is the centrepiece of the Gallery of Romanticism. Visitors are greeted by a chapel that introduces them to Friedrich's poetic imagery with a multimedia artwork. You can experience how his paintings took shape, immerse yourself in the originals and find out what kind of person the soap farmer's son from Swedish Pomerania was. Or did you know that Caspar David Friedrich bred canaries and was famous and infamous for his enormous full beard?
The building is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag.
