Greifswalder Salon über die Scherenschnittkünstlerin und Dichterin Johanna Beckmann (1868-1941 - Burg Stargard/Berlin)
with author Viola Kühn from Neubrandenburg
The artist and poet Johanna Beckmann (1868-1941) was a well-known porcelain painter, silhouette artist and writer in her time. She worked for the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur (KPM) for twenty years. By 1920, she had designed 30 books with her own texts and silhouettes, including Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. She designed art books that were very popular in bourgeois circles. The changes in political and social conditions that began in 1919 affected many people, including Johanna Beckmann. Her increasingly severe eye condition further impaired her work. Johanna Beckmann died lonely, blind and impoverished.
In her biographical study, the Neubrandenburg author Viola Kühn traces Johanna Beckmann's life and artistic path using notes, letters, essays and books by Johanna Beckmann as well as a number of archive documents.
Her book about Johanna Beckmann was published by Barton Verlag in December 2024 and is enriched with photos, postcards and silhouettes, which she will also present at her book launch.
