Ein Tag ohne Frauen (STRAZEkino)
What if every woman simply took a day off ...
+++ Today from 6 p.m. +++
Documentary / IS, US 2024 / Director: Pamela Hogan & Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir / 70 min.
When 90 percent of Icelandic women walked off the job and out of their homes on an autumn morning in 1975, refusing to work, cook or look after the children, they brought their country to a standstill and catapulted Iceland to the "best place in the world to be a woman".
Told for the first time by the women themselves and featuring playful animation, "A Day Without Women" is subversive and unexpectedly funny. "We loved our chauvinistic pigs," recalls one of the activists, "we just wanted to change them a little!"
Released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the strike in 2025, the film's message about the collective power of women to change their society encourages us to rethink what is possible.
"The film "A Day Without Women" is an impressive monument to the courageous and humorous women who set this development in motion through their actions." -NDR Kultur - Das Journal
"A feel-good movie that makes both sexes rejoice..." -Afro Toronto
"An inspiring documentary. Nearly five decades later, you'll find yourself cheering them on as the day approaches." -DH Digital Hit
