All das Schöne
Play by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe.
How do you react as a seven-year-old child to a mother's suicide attempt? You try to cheer her up, to convince her that there are many things worth living for. The best way to do this is to write a list: it starts with 1. ice cream, 2. water fights and continues to grow in the various phases of life - initially so as not to lose heart, later because of the overwhelming feeling of first love. The childish project has already become a constant drive in life that doesn't even stop at the number 10,000.
Depression is part of our everyday lives and has many facets - it is never fun. This makes it all the more astonishing that the Brit Duncan Macmillan has managed to write a stunningly funny, sensitive and stirring play about this subject. The constant preoccupation with the deadly serious subject leads to the exact opposite - we experience a passionate plea for why it is absolutely worth living.
