Barockpark Griebenow

Guided tour with Carola Morgenstern, Gernot Hübner and Brunhilde Weiss | Participation: 15 euros

Under Count Carl Gustaf Rehnskiöld (1651-1722), Field Marshal to the Swedish King Charles XII (1882-1718), and his wife Elisabeth Funck, one of the largest non-royal Swedish castles with farmsteads and estate housing was built in Griebenow in 1707-09, presumably to a design by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger (1654-1728), still Sweden's most famous architect, or his entourage, in the style of Swedish Baroque Classicism. Griebenow Castle is the core of the absolutist castle and estate complex, the culmination of its building, axis and spatial composition. Over the centuries, the estate was renovated, altered and rebuilt several times. The Baroque design principles were generally taken into account, which means that the overarching design ideas can still be seen throughout the castle and estate complex today.

Since the mid-1980s, the Baroque park at Griebenow near Greifswald has been brought back to life with park maintenance measures by the Baroque Park Griebenow e.V.. These activities are gradually being extended to the entire area of the former estate.

The guided tour of the park aims to illustrate the problems and the basis for the decisions and to pay tribute to the municipality's almost 40 years of commitment to the exemplary revitalization of the grounds. The guided tour of the park will be followed by a visit to the newly renovated castle.
