We take the time to take a closer look at the little things in life, so that we can draw them.

The natural world and its flora open up a whole new perspective for us. Whether it’s the pollen of a flower, the wings of a dragonfly or water droplets on a leaf, this world of textures and colours is so multifaceted and fascinating. I have a wide selection of subjects that you can examine closely in this workshop and sketch under expert guidance. If you’d like to join us, please bring an A4 sketchpad with you. I’ll be happy to provide drawing materials. I look forward to seeing you.

Course content
- Observation techniques: recognising the shapes, structures and proportions of pollen, insect wings, leaves and water droplets; learning to see the details
- Fundamentals of natural history sketching: line work, hatching, light and shade; simplifying complex detailed forms using various sketching methods
- Understanding materials on a small scale: using different pencil grades and tools to create transparent effects; the texture of various surfaces
- Working process and composition: choice of subject, cropping, composing the image on A4 paper, working efficiently on short studies

Learning objectives
- Observe microscopic/small-scale subjects with focus and translate them into sketches that are true to scale
- Apply hatching, contouring and tonal techniques to depict depth, volume and materiality
- Convey transparency, lustre and fine structures convincingly in a sketch

Courses offered by the Vorpommern-Greifswald Adult Education Centre are aimed at people aged 14 and over.
