Stralsund’s most beautiful cemetery is the St Jürgen Cemetery in the Kniepervorstadt district. With its two large, shady avenues of lime trees, its firs and oaks entwined with ivy, its arborvitae and yew shrubs, its ancient mounds, half-ruined and overgrown with evergreen plants, and its newer flower-adorned, carefully tended flowerbeds, it truly provides the perfect setting for its mourning visitors. It is a monument of great cultural and family-historical significance.

The St Jürgen Cemetery, laid out in 1675 on what is now Hainholzstraße, is the final resting place of numerous prominent figures, without whose contributions Stralsund’s cultural achievements would be inconceivable. Mayors, nobles, scientists, merchants, doctors, artists, clergy and military figures who have gained significance beyond the confines of local history are laid to rest here. Some of them will be honoured during a biographical tour.
