Cultural-historical and botanical guided tour with Dr Michael Lissok and Thoralf Weiß | Meeting point: Kaiserlinde, Karl-Marx-Platz | Fee: 12 euros

In a new series of events, Dr Michael Lissok and Thoralf Weiß invite you to join them on cultural-historical and botanical city walks to interesting sites showcasing Greifswald’s garden culture.

The first tour begins at Karl-Marx-Platz (formerly Carlsplatz) by the ‘Kaiserlinde’ and the memorial stone. The historical and current planting and layout of the square will be explained. The route then continues along the rampart to the residential area within the city walls. From the rampart, the view extends to the station forecourt, with information on the planting and the monument to Mayor Päpke.

Rubenow-Platz, with the Rubenow monument, is one of Greifswald’s oldest and most significant squares. The square’s appearance and function have changed over the centuries of its existence. We follow its historical traces. The walk continues to the former spa gardens, the ‘English Garden’ and the ‘Giftbude’, to the Credner Gardens, the former Naugangswiese, and to the zoo, the former city park. To conclude, we’ll visit the hospital garden in the courtyard of the New Campus and learn about the former ‘Black Monastery’ complex with its gardens, as well as the first initiative for a university botanical garden, a botanical collection and a plant inventory by Prof. Jakob Gerschow.
