Community gardens in Stralsund
Guided cycle tour with Dr Angela Pfennig | Price: 15 euros | Meeting point: Stralsund | Knieperdamm 5
References to the popularity of day-trip destinations in the Stralsund area, such as Hainholz or the island of Dänholm with its inns, can be found as far back as the 16th century.
From the start of the 19th century, alongside the private gardens of the town’s residents, public gardens and garden cafés increasingly developed into social hubs.
Stralsund boasted a multitude of such cafés and garden venues catering to all social classes: the Bürgergarten, Rühes Konzerthaus, Kurhaus Devin, Meinkes Garten, Zentralpark, Stadtkoppel, Casinogarten, Martinsgarten, Volksgarten, Schwedenschanze, Heinzelmanns Garten and others. Although social life has long since faded away at most of these historic venues of enjoyment, venerable trees often still bear witness to the splendour of those places of entertainment.
This cycle tour takes you on a journey through history to discover Stralsund’s significant former garden cafés.
