The Greifswald artist Johannes Schubert (1 July 1887 - 4 September 1967): Paintings and graphics from private collections
After studying at the Dresden Academy of Art (1906-1914) and developing his talent at the Berlin master studio Köpping, Johannes Schubert began his career at the School of Applied Arts in Szczecin. He came from the Beck-Schubert artist dynasty from Dessau (see Im Schatten der großen Meister, Dessau 2009). He moved to Greifswald at the end of the 1920s. Wolgaster Landstraße 77 became the centre of his artistic activities. His wife Emmy, also an academically trained artist, was an important critic and patron.
Schubert captured regional architecture, harbour facilities, landscapes and the people who lived here in numerous drawings, watercolours and small-format paintings. In addition to cityscapes and landscapes, he also created portraits and numerous depictions of flowers. He knew how to capture their filigree beauty with both factual precision and artistic interpretation.
His work is characterised by the combination of topographical accuracy and atmospheric condensation in cityscapes and landscapes. At the same time, his scientific graphics for the University of Greifswald are characterised by a precise, objective style of representation. Schubert's depictions convey a vivid picture of the regional everyday and economic history of his time.
The exhibition aims to make the privately owned artistic legacy accessible to a wider public and remind us that artists "from the second tier" also contribute to Greifswald's cultural identity. At the same time, it is intended to encourage the discovery and long-term preservation of further works by Schubert in archives and private collections.
