Der ‚Preis des Krieges‘ in der römischen Kaiserzeit: Kriegsfolgen in Sieg und Niederlage

Public evening lecture by Professor Dr. Oliver Stoll (University of Passau, Chair of Ancient History)

Starting with the emperor as the winner or loser, the consequences of the war for the soldiers and their families are considered, then the fate of the civilian population and the cities as well as their environment. There are usually 'positive' or 'negative' aspects from the respective perspective, which can be viewed in contrast. The lecture cannot be more than a prelude to understanding an important topic (not only) of ancient military history; rather, it should be seen as an indication of possible, insufficiently considered fields of research that actually call for research networks to address the problem areas. The 'price of war' (a deliberate ambiguity) has always been high - even in antiquity, all those involved ultimately had to pay it in one way or another.

Oliver Stoll studied Classical Archaeology, Ancient History, Pre- and Early History and Provincial Roman Archaeology at the Universities of Mainz and Freiburg. He received his doctorate in Classical Archaeology in 1992 and habilitated in Ancient History in 2001. He worked as a research assistant at the Universities of Stuttgart-Hohenheim and Mainz and as a research fellow at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz. After working as a research assistant in Bamberg, he was appointed Professor of Ancient History at the University of Passau in 2007. His main areas of research are: Military history of antiquity, economic and social history of Roman antiquity, slavery research, history of technology and specialized texts, religious history of imperial Rome, archaeology of the provinces and Limes research.
