Auf, auf in die Karrendorfer Wiesen
In early summer, the salt grassland of the Karrendorf meadows is full of life. Find out more about the coastal flooded bog on a guided excursion!
Not far from Greifswald are the Karrendorfer Wiesen - a fascinating natural paradise protected by the Michael Succow Foundation as part of the National Natural Heritage. This special coastal flooded bog is not only a hotspot of biodiversity, but also an impressive example of the power of nature. With its 350 hectares of rare salt grassland, the area provides a habitat for specialized plant species and a variety of wading and water birds. Numerous feathered guests breed, rest and moult here, while the salt marsh peat bogs also act as natural carbon reservoirs.
Now, in early summer, nature shows its colorful side!
The meadows are in full bloom, colorful insects buzz through the warm air and young birds make their first attempts at flight. Various bird species find a home here and can be easily observed by curious visitors. The Karrendorf meadows invite you to enjoy nature in all its abundance - an experience for birdwatchers, nature lovers and recreation seekers alike.
Fancy a guided discovery tour?
Our three-hour nature conservation tour provides exciting insights into this dynamic ecosystem. Together with the foundation's federal volunteers, we start at the parking lot in Groß Karrendorf and follow the causeway to the bridge in front of Koos Island. Along the way, we will learn how the area is changed by the tides, which animals are native to the area and why it is so important to preserve this landscape. Participation is on a donation basis - your contribution helps to preserve this valuable conservation area in the long term.
