Universität im Rathaus: Bohren oder heilen: neue Ansätze in der Kariestherapie

Speaker: Prof. Dr. med. dent. Christian Splieth (University Medicine)

The classic concept of dentistry corresponds to car repair: a hole in the tooth must be sealed. Firstly, lead was never used here, and secondly, this does not correspond to the current state of knowledge about caries. Caries is a chronic disease in which the teeth continuously lose minerals. A filling does not change this very much, unless it is as toxic as lead.

This is why caries management is now used to reduce or even reverse caries activity through remineralization. This results in genuine healing without drilling, which provides the best basis for subsequent esthetic and functional rehabilitation of the tooth. Gum diseases such as periodontal disease are treated at the same time.

Since 2004, scientists from the University of Greifswald have been presenting their research projects in the "University in the Town Hall" lecture series in the Bürgerschaftssaal of the Town Hall. The aim of the lecture series is to give the general public an insight into the diverse research carried out at the University's five faculties. Admission is free.
