Guided tour: “It all began 75 years ago – Otto Dibbelt’s dream”
Guided tour of the new special exhibition “Otto Dibbelt’s Dream: A Natural History Museum for Stralsund”.
Otto Dibbelt, a native of Stralsund, had long harboured a dream of establishing a natural history museum. In 1951, he was finally able to realise this dream by founding the Natur-Museum in his home town of Stralsund. The new special exhibition showcases many treasures from the Otto Dibbelt Collection – including objects of natural history as well as cultural and art-historical artefacts from almost every genre and era.
On the guided tour marking the 75th anniversary, you will learn more about the museum’s founding during the difficult post-war period, as well as about Dibbelt’s determination to push through the Natur-Museum despite many concerns and reservations, thereby laying the foundation for today’s German Maritime Museum.
Take a look at the first exhibits, Dibbelt’s workplace and a historic whale skeleton. You can also see prints and drawings from the art collection of the private collector Otto Dibbelt, which are being shown for the first time.
Meeting point: At the special exhibition in the MEERESMUSEUM
Duration: 45 minutes each
Cost: Participation in the guided tours is free with a valid museum ticket.
