The quake
Literary service on Mechthild of Magdeburg with theologian and writer Julia Koll
We would like to celebrate the third university service in our "Zwischen - Zeiten" series with theologian and writer Julia Koll, whose debut work "Das Buch Mechthild" was recently published by Matthes & Seitz Verlag.
As in the church service, it is about the work and person of Mechthild of Magdeburg, who was probably born around 800 years ago.
Mechthild's writing tells of a direct encounter with God, flowing divine light, of how she perceived the world, of irrepressible strength and militant love. A mystic through and through, her work interweaves literary genres and forms to create what is often described today as "perhaps the boldest erotic poetry" of the Middle Ages. In her Deput novel, Julia Koll traces these very traces, and in the service she gives us an insight into the life, experiences and writing of this woman, who continues to fascinate us to this day.
Both Mechthild's presumably own words and passages from Julia Koll's "Book of Mechthild" will accompany the service. Interwoven with prayer, singing, organ and pieces by the studio choir of the Institute of Church Music and Musicology, a special literary and spiritual service will be held, to which everyone is cordially invited. Afterwards, as always, there will be an opportunity for discussion and dialogue over a drink in the side aisle of the cathedral.
Admission is free.
