A journey around the world in poetry films of the 1920s

Public evening lecture by Professor Dr Doren Wohlleben (University of Marburg)

Poetry films of the 1920s used the compositional method of the symphony as a montage principle to make new metropolitan experiences visually and acoustically tangible worldwide in the traditional form of the symphony. In polyrhythmic works of art inspired by music, architecture, the visual arts, theatre and the new possibilities of experimental avant-garde film, surreal film, animation and advertising film, they make poetry a multimodal experience. In a journey around the world, well-known and lesser-known poetic urban films are compared with each other in terms of their aesthetic structures - in a journey into the past, the beginnings of the history of poetry film, which are still fascinating today, are outlined.

After studying Classical Philology and German Studies in Heidelberg and Pisa and completing a doctorate at the University of Regensburg on contemporary literature, Doren Wohlleben, a long-time member of the "Ethics of Text Cultures" programme, completed her habilitation at the University of Augsburg on "Enigmatics - the Enigma as a Hermeneutic Boundary Figure in Myth, Philosophy and Literature". After several years in a Heisenberg position in Heidelberg and trilateral guest professorships (Israel/USA/Europe), Doren Wohlleben has been Professor of Modern and Contemporary German Literature with a focus on the mediation of literature in the media at the Philipps University of Marburg since 2019.
