Also on the Dänholm ... is now being dug. The island of Dänholm

Guided tour with Dr Angela Pfennig | Meeting point: Stralsund | Entrance to the Marinemuseum on the Dänholm | Participation: 9 euros

The island of Dänholm, just off the coast of Stralsund, created a natural harbour that has always been appreciated by seafaring peoples. Its chequered history is predominantly military, but also horticultural. The first confirmed documents and plans for fortifications on the island date back to the time of the Thirty Years' War. After 1815, the construction of new fortifications began to defend the town from the sea.

In addition to extensive structural extensions, the Prussian navy also created avenues along important paths and planted trees and shrubs on the Sternschanze and in the green areas between the military buildings. With the demilitarisation of the Dänholm, which was also used for military purposes during the National Socialist and GDR periods, in 1991, the island once again became the focus of public attention and now offers a wide range of opportunities for civilian use.

The tour follows the military traces, shows the historical structures that have grown under unique natural conditions and explains the horticultural values that determine the character of the island.
