In English:
Did you know that you can study borders at University? Dr. Alexander Drost is the coordinator of the international graduate programme “Baltic Borderlands – Shifting Boundaries of Mind and Culture in the Borderlands of the Baltic Sea Region,” a collaboration of the Universities in Lund (Sweden), Tartu (Estonia) and Greifswald. He studied in Greifswald and Joensuu (Finland), and did research in London and Calcutta. Now, that’s an international CV.

In his Input Lecture, Alexander will take you through the historical development of different border concepts and their application, using examples from different times and locations in the world. He will also draw attention to current problems of academic discourses about borders and their (non-)representation in the non-academic public, which highlights certain discrepancies in the communication and dissemination of rather new understandings of borders.

The nineteenth century western model of the (nation) state defines our understanding of border and space until today. However, globalization, the overcoming of the ideological divide in the 1980s and 90s as well as changing mobility patterns stimulated new thinking about borders beyond the territorial. Additionally, new forms of security threats, the emergence of digital spaces, and ideas of multiculturalism nurtured an underlying understanding of borders as orders of mind and culture. And yet, recent developments have turned the page again. Abandoning the story of an open world, more and more narratives take a traditional border perspective of a strong and homogenous state, which withstands the complexity and diversity of overlapping cultural, economic, political and social boundaries.
